Desert & Xeriscape Weed Control
When a regular weed treatment schedule is maintained we can
guarantee weed control.
Pre-Emergent Applications
A chemical applied before a plants seed germinate to prevent
it from emerging from the soil.
Post-Emergent Applications
A chemical applied to kill a plant after its germination and
emergence from the soil.
Broad Leaf Weed Control in Turf
The best weed control is a healthy lawn. However, some weeds
are invasive and compete with lawns. Weed control requires
knowledge about the weed itself. This includes proper identification
and knowledge of the life cycle of the weed. The idea is to
control the weed at its weakest point in the life cycle.
Examples: Spurge, dandelions,
white clover, black medic, purslane
Fertilizations : Lawn, Tree and Shrubs A well planned (and simple) fertility program is
essential to turf maintenance. Turf grass requires 16 basic
nutrients for growth. Most of these are available to turf
from soil, but not in proper amounts for proper growth.
Insect & Disease Control: Turf &
Ornamentals Insect and Related Pests: Most injury from
insect pests can be prevented by regular inspection and immediate
remedial action. Insects may cause disorders such as die-back,
stunting, and distortions of growth, as well as browning,
yellowing, and bleaching of leaves. By detecting such symptoms
early, you may be able to prevent the rapid buildup of insect
populations.
Diseases: Most of the serious diseases result
from infection by microscopic fungi. Fungi are low forms of
plant life. Threadlike, devoid of chlorophyll, and incapable
of manufacturing their own food, they survive on dead or living
plant and animal matter. Most fungi produce spores (seed like
bodies) and other structures resistant to adverse conditions.
For example, sclerotia may be spread by wind, water mechanical
means (mowers), or by infected plant material such as grass
clippings. Some diseases are favored by high temperatures,
while others are most destructive during the cooler months.
Most diseases are easier to prevent than to cure. Weakened,
ill-adapted plants are more susceptible to certain fungi,
often caused by stress, drought, or hot dry winds.
Olive Fruit Prevention
A foliar spray of certain chemicals that will reduce or eliminate
undesirable fruit in ornamental Olive Trees.
Long Term Pre-Emergent (Soil Sterilization)
Long term pre-emergents may be applied to certain areas such
as utility, highway, pipeline and railroad right-of-ways,
petroleum tank farms, lumberyards, storage areas, industrial
plant sites, and around farm buildings.
Most long term pre-emergents (such as Diuron)
are not recommended around turf, ornamentals, waterways, irrigation
ditches, or any other area where runoff may occur due to possible
destruction of plant life or water contamination. Long-term
pre-emergents are used generally when a period of One Year
or more is desired.
Under Asphalt Spraying
Some herbicides may be applied to a surface before asphalt
is put down to prevent most tough woody stemmed plants from
popping through the asphalt.
Nutsedge Control (“Nutgrass”)
Nutsedges are perennial weeds that superficially
resemble grasses.
Nutsedges grow mainly from tubers or "nutlets"
formed on rhizomes, mostly in the upper foot of soil. Leaves
are V-shaped in cross section and arranged in sets of three
at the base. Stems are triangular in cross section. Tubers
of yellow nutsedge are produced singly while purple nutsedge
tubers are produced in chains, several on a single rhizome.
Nutsedges are a problem in the lawn because
they grow faster, have a more upright growth habit, and are
lighter green in color than most grass species, resulting
in a non-uniform turf. In gardens and landscapes, nutsedges
will emerge through bark or rock mulches in shrub plantings
and vegetable and flower beds throughout the growing season.
They are often difficult to control and
take more than one application to kill.
Aeration
To maintain a healthy lawn through periods of stress, the
soil should have adequate water, air and nutrients in the
top 6 to 10 inches.
Soils that are hard and compacted impede
root growth, which prevents the grass from developing the
deep root system that is essential to survive hot, dry periods.
Core aeration is the process of mechanically
removing plugs of thatch and soil from the lawn. Aeration
opens the soil, helps reduce compaction, improves water infiltration,
improves rooting, reduces thatch and acts in many other ways
to improve the lawn and to reduce stress.
